Doodles: An in-depth guide
A summary of our research into the Doodles NFT project. We undertake this research already for our personal trading, and share it in case any of our followers might find it useful as well. If you have any requests for other projects you’d like to see guides on, we would be interested to hear.
In these in-depth guides, we score NFT projects along a number of different dimensions to create an overall score out of 10. Attempting to quantify the quality of different projects helps us to compare collections that we like, and we use this research to inform our desired buy-in prices.

Full disclaimer: we hold 1 Doodle
Doodles are a pastel-coloured, 10k PFP-style NFT collection, that launched in March 2021. ART
- The Doodles art is of course great, and has certainly been an important contributor to the project’s success. The art is extremely unique in both its style and colour-grading, follows a totally coherent design language, and is instantly recognisable. Doodles are one of the most copied/‘derived’ collections for these reasons — a testament to the impact that its art has had on the space.
- Doodles are a 10k generative collection, with hand drawn 1/1s and super rares that feature unique heads, characters and outfits
- Defining characteristics of the collection are its pastel colours and simplistic line-drawn 2d forms, and some of its most iconic traits are the ‘floating’ eyes, rainbow vomit, post-it note face, and puffer jacket.
- Super rares feature apes, aliens, pickles, skeletons, balloons, popsicles, ice-creams, flame head and doodles in various animal costumes.
- Doodles make great PFPs, and these are widely repped across NFT twitter, for good reason
- The Artist is Burnt Toast; Canadian illustrator, designer and animator
(Twitter; Instagram) - Burnt Toast has an incredibly impressive portfolio that includes previous work for Google, Whatsapp, Snapchat, Adobe, Dropbox, Red Bull and many more
- For many of these clients, previous work has centred around creating sticker packs
- The art across Doodles’ subsequent NFT releases (Space Doodles and Dooplicators) is executed in line with the iconic style, and also features animation, adding extra interest
- The quality of the art is continued across all of its Web2 output, from its website to its socials and discord, where visual elements are all executed to Doodles’ characteristic high standard, with plentiful custom art, animations, stickers and emojis.
- Doodles’ art has also been impeccable across its physical exhibitions, with the brand having created some of the most visually striking and impressive IRL exhibitions in the NFT space, and becoming known for their in-person events. More on this in a later section.
The Doodles art is iconic and set trends in the space. It is executed flawlessly across all of Doodles’ output, from its NFTs, to its Web2 components and IRL exhibitions. Burnt Toast has created his own world within which Doodles exist and make perfect sense. The art has no doubt played a role in cementing Doodles as a historically important NFT collection.

TEAM
Founders:
- Doodles has 3 founders: Evan Keast, Scott Martin (Burnt Toast), and Jordan Castro (Poopie)
- Like Burnt Toast, Evan Keast is also Canadian. Previous to Doodles he worked as a marketer and NFT consultant, with previous positions at Kabam Games, Dapper Labs and Crytpo Kitties
- Evan Keast is ex Marketing Lead at both Dapper Labs and CryptoKitties, and Jordan Castro was ex project-lead of Crypto Kitties at Dapper Labs
- CryptoKitties is an OG NFT project — an Ethereum blockchain game developed by Dapper Labs that allowed players to purchase, collect, breed and sell NFT cats. It was one of the earliest attempts to deploy blockchain technology for recreation and leisure.
- CryptoKitties was an incredibly successful and innovative project in its own right, and did all this super early on in 2017 (CrytpoPunks era). They invented technologies that are widespread in the space today, such as wrapping and breeding NFTs.
- These guys were very early to the NFT/web3 space, and are innovators. It’s no real surprise that their second project in the space has been so enormously successful
- Jordan is fully doxed with public personal IG
- The founders’ previous success with Dapper Labs means that they likely turned down big opportunities for VC funding — this is important as it reasserts their commitment to web3 and decentralisation, and by extension, returning value to their holders
Smart Contract Engineer:
- Vancouver-based smart contract development agency WestCoastNFT helped to launch Doodles — an experienced team specialising in custom smart contracts, with lots of expertise and experience in the space
- In their first 3 months, they helped launch 14 NFT projects, including 888, Secret Society of Whales, Based Fished Mafia, Boneheads, and then Doodles, all with great success
CEO
- On 6th May 2022, Doodles announced their appointment of Julian Holguin, former President of Billboard, as CEO of Doodles. This was an impressive appointment, that captured a lot of attention both within and outside the NFT space.
- Holguin has more than a decade of experience in leading Billboard’s strategic growth and innovation, and 14 years of experience in executive roles at large media and entertainment brands, such as MRC Studios and NBC Universal
- His career to date has seen him successfully scale and monetise IP’s in the entertainment industry, making him a perfect fit for Doodles’ future plans
- Doodles state that Holguin’s goal will be to expand the Doodles IP through music, gaming and entertainment
Pharrell
- At NFT.NYC 2022, Doodles announced Pharrell Williams as a new board member, and Chief Brand Officer (CBO)
- They also announced that Pharrell will be producing Vol 1 of Doodles records
Extremely strong team with very impressive CVs, that includes enormous early success in the NFT space, and experience in growing the IP of entertainment brands. The team have demonstrated great vision, true innovation, ample ability to execute, and great knowledge of the space.
SCORE 10/10
COMMUNITY
- Community is one of the single biggest selling points for Doodles — this project is the benchmark for community-led projects, and has been a pioneer in this regard
Doodlebank:
- The Doodlebank (DAO) is the project’s community treasury that was created with the purpose of being used to “scale our team and begin experimenting to grow the Doodles brand”
- The Doodlebank is funded with 50% of all revenue generated from secondary sales
- The fund was also seeded with 420 ETH from the initial mint
- At the time of writing there is 2,541 ETH in the Doodlebank; the team update the fund size, and every transaction made, with weekly posts in the discord
- Holders are entitled to 1 vote for every Doodle owned
- How the fund is used is completely decided by the community — every holder can submit proposals on new initiatives, fund allocation, and strategic direction
- There is a process through which proposals progress from idea to implementation:
IDEA: Any holder who has an idea that they are passionate about can become a Doodle Champion. Ideas are posted and discussed in the discourse forum on the website. The discourse forum is used to gather feedback, iterate, and gage the level of support for their idea.
PRELIMINARY PROPOSAL: When an idea is ready for the next stage, the champion creates a Preliminary Proposal in the discourse forum, and a temperature check vote is conducted. There must be a voter turnout of 15% for the proposal to be upgraded (1 Doodle = 1 Vote), so there must be 1,500 votes, and it must achieve majority support from voters to become eligible
FINAL PROPOSAL: Once these requirements are met, the founders will upgrade the proposal, maintaining as much of the original proposal as possible, but adding detail and potentially restructuring if there are necessary legal or financial considerations. The final proposal is then posted by the founders, and the voter turn-out requirements range from 5–15%, depending on the level of ETH required to carry out the proposal. Again a majority vote decides.
- A notable example of a Doodlebank proposal that successfully ascended through all the stages and was enacted is as follows:
- The final proposal for the Q1 extended experiences budget ended up allocating 420 ETH from the Doodlebank, and was voted through with a 99% majority
Socials
- Doodles have a very active and friendly community on Discord and Twitter, and to some carry the image of being a more amicable and happy alternative to the BAYC community
IRL
- Like BAYC, their IRL events are renowned, and have no doubt played a big role in fostering connections between holders, and cementing their strong community. By bridging the web3/IRL gap, Doodles have provided their holders with tangible experiences, and a real reason to continue holding.
- An great example of their IRL events was their exhibition at SXSW 2022, expenditures for which were voted on by the Doodlebank in the above proposal
SXSW 2022
- South-by-south-west is a huge arts festival and conference for creators, that attracts about 150,000 attendants each year.
- Doodles hosted an interactive exhibit, with free access granted to Doodles holders, and access also available to SXSW 2022 ticket holders, though with some parts available exclusively to Doodles holders
- Their instillation featured a panel with creators, a gift shop, Doodles art display and other interactive and immersive installations, and Doodle themed food and refreshments such as Doodle Coffee, Noodle Bar (hosted by Noodles) and Doodle Popsicle bar (see video below)
- Exclusively available to Doodles Holders was a fireside chat with founders, featuring Burnt Toast, Tulip, Poopie, and Matt Medved, and an afterparty featuring special guests.
- The Doodles exhibition attracted lots of headlines and publicity, and was very well-received in the wider media.
Doodles has a very passionate, active and friendly community, and is a community-led project in the truest sense. Excellent IRL events have helped to further bring the community together

HISTORIC PERFORMANCE
- The project released to its whitelist on 17th March, and to the public on 18th March, for a mint price of 0.123 in both cases — a very high mint price at the time. The collection had no problems selling out though, due to the hype surrounding the release on the back of the founders’ credentials and its art.
- This hype led to a gas war for the public sale, in which users typically paid between 3–5 ETH in transaction fees to mint their maximum allocation of 5 Doodles. This meant that most public minters paid close to 1 ETH per Doodle when including gas fees.
- People’s willingness to spend this much on gas reflected their conviction in the project, as well as the floor price that had been set by the 24-hour presale, which was predominantly above 1 ETH
- However, after the public mint, the price dipped to around 0.8 ETH, a level at which it stayed for roughly the first week of the project, meaning that many who minted in the public sale were not instantly in profit
- Around the start of the second week of the project, the floor price began an upward trajectory, setting a local ATH of 1.9 ETH on Oct 24th.
- For the remainder of the projects first 4 weeks, the floor price fluctuated between 1.8 ETH, to transitory dips below 1 ETH, before setting off on a steep upward climb from 0.9 ETH to 3.3 ETH in the 5 days prior to to Nov 18th. The floor price then settled between 2–3 ETH for the second month of its release.
- On Dec 14th, the floor price began another upward trajectory, this time consistently setting ATHs all the way up to a local peak of 13.5 ETH, which it set on 12th Jan. This sharp growth occurred at a period in which the NFT market as a whole transitioned out of a bear market, and into a very bullish January. Many established projects also performed well during this time frame, but very few others achieved close to 600% growth in floor price (2.27 ETH to 11.5 ETH) from 14th Dec to 14th Jan (MAYC: 4.8 to 14.25 = 200%; BAYC: 58.1 to 100 = 72%).
- The floor priced retraced back to 9 ETH over the next 2 weeks, before once again taking off on the Jan 26th, setting a new floor ATH of 16.9 ETH on Feb 1st.
- Following this, the floor held relatively stable, spending the majority of Feb and Mar in the 10–15 ETH range, with a couple of brief dips down to 8 ETH, as well as setting 2 new ATHs of 17.5 and 19.5 ETH. February and much of March was a period in which total NFT volume fell sharply, and many projects struggled, with significant retraces experienced by all of the blue chip projects.
- Doodles’ steady performance during this period very notably ran counter to most of the rest of the market, and was regarded by many as a very bullish indicator for Doodles’ future. As predicted, Doodles emerged out of this bearish period very strongly, setting its 19.5 ETH high alongside strong performance from other top tier collections.
- On May 1st, Doodles began a sharp upward trajectory that saw it break 20 ETH for the first time, and set its current ATH floor price of 26 ETH on May 5th
- This massive pump was at the time quite inexplicable, and remains so to this day. There were no big announcements in the lead up to the pump, and in fact there had been no announcements at all in the discord for over a month beforehand. On the May 5th, Doodles did announce that they would be making a big announcement soon, as well as 4 global brand appearances for the coming year, but this actually marked the top of the pump, rather than being a leading indicator.
- The next day, Doodles doubly announced the appointment of Julian Holguin as new CEO, as well as an airdrop of “a mysterious device” that would be taking place 6 days later, on 12th May
- The floor price held at around 19 ETH until the Dooplicator airdrop, after which the floor price retraced to around 14 ETH for those Doodles which had claimed their Dooplicator
- Since its launch, the Dooplicator floor price has held very steady at around 3 ETH in its pre-revealed state (aside from on the market’s worst days)
- During this time, the Doodles floor price has predominantly held between 10–12 ETH, against the backdrop of an NFT market that has struggled immensely as a whole, amid big crashes in cryptos and other asset classes, and bleak macroeconomic prospects. The full set price has thus held fairly strongly at around 14 ETH during this market downturn.
Very strong and consistent growth since launch, Doodles has firmly established itself in the top tier of NFT projects. Leads in terms of performance in all market conditions, and tracks the other most well-regarded sets in the space.

ACTION SINCE LAUNCH
NFT.NYC 2021
- Within 1-week of launching Doodles, the founders deployed approximately 22.6 ETH to showcase the brand at NFT.NYC 2021, a critical cultural event for NFTs and web3, in order to display how web2/web3 brands can deploy grassroots marketing activations on the ground and in the community.
Miami Art Basel 2021
Marketing, brand, and digital experience activation. Proposed and voted by the community, the founders deployed a total of 137.63 ETH from the Doodlebank to accomplish the following:
- 40,000 Sqft Burnt Toast mural in Wynwood, Miami
- Heart Basel party ft. performances by Gunna, Amine, A-trak, Dave1, D33J, ASAP Nast
- Heart Basel art show at mural location with 6,000+ attendees ft. floor-to-ceiling inflatable installation by Geronimo
- New doodle holders with millions of earned impressions for the doodles brand: Future, Gunna, Steve Aoki, Dillon Francis, Rich the Kid, Fat Joe, etc.
- Doodles custom fashion debut at private retailer event
- Relationship-building retreat with founders, artists & entertainers at Doodles Miami HQ
- Snapchat partnership ft. Doodles custom lens (MVP — V2 in development)
- Snapchat Lens takeover ad campaign with 2 million geo-targeted impressions
- Snapchat experiential partnership ft. AR-experience live Burnt Toast Doodles Mural
- Earned Media: 100M+ Cross-Platform Impressions, Hypebeast coverage and Coinbase coverage. Ongoing inbound press requests.
Non-diluting second drop: Space Doodles
- Space Doodles were Doodles’ second drop, available to holders only, and free of charge. The Space Doodles release was quite an interesting concept, and distinct from mutations/breeding popularised by BAYC and CryptoKitties.
- The way it works is that the Doodle Bot smart contract wraps the Doodle NFT, and generates a Space Doodle, which arrives in the holders’ wallet, with the Bot’s vault holding the original Doodle. The holder can unwrap and re-wrap their Doodle as many times as they’d like, and can sell their NFT in either form (but not both — selling a doodle NFT wrapped or unwrapped means that you also no longer hold the other).
- The founders claim to have improved upon existing NFT wrapping technology — a concept which they themselves first introduced with Crytokitties
- Space Doodles appear as the original Doodle inside an animated spacecraft. Each Doodle’s Space Doodle has a rarity, traits and levels that are independent of the underlying Doodle’s rarity and traits
- Space Doodle levels (sector, nearest planets, propellant, piloting ability, mechanical knowledge etc) possibly hint at future gameplay applications. It is known that these stats will be used in future experiences in some way
- Space Doodles was an interesting approach to a second drop. Whilst it didn’t create a liquidation opportunity for its holders that allowed them to retain the original asset, it effectively increase scarcity, as NFTs can only be in one of the two forms at any one time, and the two collections have separate marketplace pages owing to their different contracts
- By being ranked independently of their underlying Doodle, Space Doodles also give holders essentially a reroll of their rarity, providing a fresh opportunity to score a rare, but without detracting from the value of the existing Doodle’s rarities
Companion Airdrop: Dooplicator
- The Dooplicator airdrop was announced a few days before the claim went live, and was shrouded in mystery, with only this information revealed:
A backpack-sized device with extraordinary powers usable in our next major product release. Watch it in action at the premiere of our trailer during NFT NYC.
What’s inside? Well, all we can say for now is that it’s in the process of forming nebulous Doodley matter. Traits and rarities will be revealed on June 23rd.
- The claim period ends the day before its use is revealed at NFT.NYC 2022, with ‘Dooplication’ to begin some time this summer.
- Theories abound about what the Dooplicator will do, but from listening to Evan Keast’s talk at VeeCon 2022, we gleaned a number of things that hint at the possible direction:
If they could go back now, the Doodles collection would be 25k, not 10k
They want a lower barrier to entry so that more people can own Doodles
They want there to be 1,000,000 doodles — a Doodle for everyone that wants one
- This has led many to speculate that the Dooplicators could be usable by each original Doodle holder to create spin-off Doodles. Whatever the Dooplicator does, we can expect it to be innovative, and push boundaries.
- There is a risk with ‘Dooplication’ that the market could become over-saturated, and if the Dooplicated items are not differentiated enough from Doodle NFTs, there is a serious risk that this could negatively impact the value of original Doodles.
- However, the team will definitely be aware of this possibility, and we expect the release to have been designed very much with this consideration in mind.
Further IRL Events
- SXSW 2022 interactive exhibit — covered in more detail in the Community section above, but was a very well-executed IRL event that gained the brand a lot of attention and good press
- Doodles Extended Experience — Merchandise, Physical Collectibles, Entertainment, and Performances. Also covered in above Community section
Doodlebank
- Have implemented a very effective and active DAO, that lets the community propose and vote on the brand’s actions
- Doodles have so far enacted a number of community proposals via the Doodlebank
NFT.NYC 2022
3 days of events at NFT.NYC, currently taking place
Join Doodle and Dooplicator holders from around the world at NFT NYC for a Doodles product trailer premiere, a brand new IRL experience, and exclusive holder-only benefits over 3 days of events.
- Jun 21: Launch Event — product trailer premier; on-stage reveal ft. Burnt Toast, Poopie, Tulip, Julian Holguin; after-party ft. special guests
- Jun 22–23: Doodle Lounge — holder HQ, community-led events
- Jun 22–23: The Genesis Factory — open to the public with line by-pass for holders; extended holder experiences; ShopDoodles pop-up
At the Launch Event, Doodles released their trailer for the Dooplicator, revealing that it will be needed to create Doodles 2:
- Also at the launch event, Doodles announced Pharrell as a new board member, and Chief Brand Officer (CBO)
- They also announced that Pharrell will be producing Vol 1 of Doodles records
- Doodles also announced that Seven Seven Six, the VC firm of Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, will be leading the first funding round for Doodles, citing their belief in the project, and their desire to help grow Doodles into a global brand.
- They also revealed that there will be a Doodles game
Doodles have been very active since launch, with numerous IRL events, two companion drops that have each brought something new to the space, as well as implementing a very functional DAO, and committing to further growth with an impressive CEO acquisition. The team have demonstrated that they are very capable, motivated and imaginative. Doodles feels in very safe hands.
SCORE 9.5/10
UTILITY
- Owning a Doodle gives holders a vote in the Doodlebank DAO, as well as the ability to make proposals. This provides holders a real opportunity to influence the direction and future utility of the project.
- Space Doodles allowed holders a chance to mint a rare item in which to ‘house’ their Doodle, and will provide further utility in future experiences
- The Dooplicator release provided holders with a 3 ETH liquidation opportunity that allows them to maintain the original asset. The Dooplicator will also have its own utility
- Both the Space Doodles and Dooplicator launch are examples of the team’s continued ambition to innovate and develop the space, and thus part of the utility of holding a Doodle is the access it provides you to the team’s ongoing innovations and product development
- Doodles also provide access to all the IRL events and holder-exclusive perks; the team have shown they are very focused on events, with 4 big events currently planned for 2022, and week-long events in Miami and NFT.NYC as well as Doodles SXSW already demonstrating exceptional ability to deliver on this front.
A nice amount of utility so far. True utility is difficult, and takes time, but Doodles have made as good a start as any project
SCORE 9.5/10
FUTURE PLANS
- The ability for holders to influence the future direction of the project is great for both the holders and the brand . The holders can essentially come up with ways of using the projects’ funds to return value to themselves, and all the ways to do so involve growing the brand and the demand for its products, which is perfectly aligned with the team’s incentives.
- This allows the team to harness the creativity of their holders to jointly decide on the best course of action for the project, as well as ensuring that the future direction of the brand is somewhat grounded in the wishes of its community. This will not only help to keep the community strong and behind the project, but will also help to make the project appealing to outside buyers, of which Doodle holders are presumably quite representative.
- Importantly, not every decision has to go through the Doodlebank, and the team are very proactive and innovative, working behind the scenes on their own plans. The teem keep their own plans very much under wraps, and have stated their desire to “under-promise and over-deliver”, having also shown great awareness of the importance of building mystery and intrigue around the project to drive hype.
- The team have shown that they are very keen to bridge web2/web3 and IRL with events, technology and entertainment, and to grow the brand through exposure to non-holders, whilst simultaneously prioritising and rewarding their community of holders
- The team have made clear that their goal is to grow Doodles into the biggest web3-based media and entertainments company, that blends events, technology, music, gaming and innovative products.
- At VeeCon, Evan Keast explained that Doodles is applying a 5–10 year plan to achieve this
- Venture Capital firm Seven Seven Six will be leading a first funding round for Doodles
The exceptionally capable team, along with the Doodlebank, places the future of the project in very strong hands. The team are ambitious and proactive, and you can well believe that they have a good chance of meeting their goals.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE & WEBSITE
- 340k twitter followers with good interaction
- Doodles PFPs are popular across NFT twitter, with lots of notable accounts supporting them
- The founders are active on Instagram; Burnt Toast has 294k followers and is a blue tick
- The website is full of great art and animation in the Doodles style. The actual site is quite basic though, and has not been noticeably updated in some time. There are much better examples in the NFT space
- Discord has nearly 70k members, and is the home of a very energised and friendly community, though much of the action is gated to holders
Very strong twitter and discord. Website could be better, and other socials are under-utilised
SCORE 8/10
HYPE
- There is good hype surrounding Doodles, with it being firmly held in the ‘blue chip’ category for most in the space, and Doodles is always talked about alongside MAYC, Moonbirds and RTFKT
- Doodles have attracted some extremely high sales; the highest to date was Pranksy’s purchase of the 1/1 ‘Gold Ape’ (#6914) for 269.69 ETH in Jan 2022.
- Steve Aoki also purchased a 1/10 alien doodle (#2238) for 269.69 ETH in Jan 2022
- There are 20 historic sales over 100 ETH at the time of writing, with 6 above 200 ETH
- Doodles sits 11th in the all-time Opensea volume charts. Only 3 10k PFP collections are ahead of them in the all-time rankings (CryptoPunks, BAYC and Moonbirds). This is a testament to Doodle’s continued demand
- Doodles are held by many notable celebrities such as Justin Beiber, Future, Gunna, Steve Aoki, Dillon Francis, Rich the Kid, Fat Joe, and big NFT names such as Pranksy (109), Gary Vee (5), and Loopify
- There are certainly more hyped projects (eg Yuga and Moonbirds), and projects that have achieved comparably in much less time (eg CloneX and Moonbirds), but Doodles is definitely up there
Lots of hype surrounding Doodles, one of the most iconic and recognisable projects, widely acknowledged to be blue chip, and its performance across all market conditions is testament to its constant buying pressure. Some projects have achieved comparable hype in less time
SCORE 8.75/10
ECONOMICS
- Doodles launched for a mint price of 0.123 ETH, generating 1,230 ETH from the initial sale
- 156k volume in secondary sales at 5% royalty earns a further 7,800 ETH (with 50% going into the Doodlebank)
- The team are extremely transparent with the economics of the project. They post every expenditure and revenue in a dedicated channel in the discord, and provide detailed reports on spending decisions, where the explain exactly what money was spent on, the revenue it generated and estimated ROI
- Evan Keast stated that Doodles always ensure that they have enough capital for 1–2 years without any extra injection. However, the Doodles sets have so far lead the charts for secondary performance with the other top-tier sets through both good and bad market conditions, so you can be fairly confident that they will maintain a good source of royalty revenue
- Venture Capital firm Seven Seven Six announced at Doodles’ NFT.NYC 2022 launch event that they will be leading a first funding round for Doodles, providing the brand with significant additional resources with which to execute their ambitious plans
- It might be nice to see Doodles exploring alternative revenue streams further as a hedge
The benchmark project with regard to economic transparency. Doodles has a steady stream of income thanks to its persistent strong performance on the secondary market. Doodles is in a very strong position economically. An improvement could be to develop alternative revenue streams further.
